Shaquille O’ Neal Encouraged His Children To Seek Careers Outside of NBA, Because He Doesn’t Think His Family Needs Another Basketball Player

Shaquille O’Neal is a legendary basketball player. However, he is not interested in having the trend continue with his children. Instead of grooming his children to become future NBA stars, O’Neal believes it could be more beneficial for them to thrive in other professions. The former NBA player recently spoke about this while speaking on the ‘pivot’ podcast where he also shared two regrets.

Shaquille O’Neal has four children from his previous marriage to Basketball Wives star Shaunie O’Neal. Their names are Shareef, Amirah, Shaqir, and Me’arah O’Neal. In addition to having children together, both parties came into the marriage with a child from a previous relationship. The former Lakers star’s firstborn is a daughter named Taahirah O’Neal, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend. Joining the fray also is Myles O’Neal, Shaunie O’Neal’s firstborn, who later took on his stepfather’s last name.

Shaquille O’Neal had an awe-inspiring NBA career. He’s a 4x Champion and was once named the MVP in 2000. From 2000 to 2002, he helped to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to take the Championship title for three consecutive years, also being named MVP each year. Most fathers would love for their children to follow in their footsteps. But even with the countless career highlights that Shaquille O’Neal has achieved, he’d like to see his kids take another route in life.
Shaq told the hosts of the Pivot Podcast that he tries to “instill” in his children that the O’Neal family “doesn’t need another basketball player.” He revealed that throughout his life as a father, he’s been willing to unleash all the tools necessary to become a great player as he has “the blueprint and answers to get them to the top.” However, he wants his children to know they need not feel pressured to chase his success. In addition, Shaquille O’Neal stated that he wants his children not to equate the game of basketball to riches. “The richest people in the world don’t do that, so I want you to focus on something else,” said the sports analyst.

Shaq suggests career paths such as running hedge funds or becoming a contractor. But none of this matters if you don’t have your education, O’Neal stressed. The former NBA player expressed plans to leave his businesses to one of his children when he reaches 70. However, it would be the offspring he feels most deserving and can correctly handle the company’s affairs.
Shaquille O’Neal has unconditional love for whom he describes to be his “six fabulous kids.” However, it seems he’s a bit too late with trying to stop them from being basketball stars. Son Shareef O’Neal is already holding down the fort as he’s been a star power forward/center in high school and college basketball. He’s currently undrafted but played for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2022 Summer League.

But Shaq is super supportive of his son’s basketball dreams. During an episode of his podcast, The Big Podcast, O’Neal said he’s 100% behind his son’s decisions. In addition, two of his other children, Shaqir and Amirah O’Neal, also share dreams of becoming basketball stars as they both are players in their own right.
